After 33 hours on the bus from Koeln to Kiev, Ukraine, the Hensons welcomed me into their home and showed me several of the beautiful orthodox churches in the city.

We also looked at what the street vendors were offering (which is just about everything!). Who would've guessed that Davey Crockett drew his inspiration from Ukraine?

To get to Sally in Balaklia, I needed to ride the train for another 13 hours. My three "roommates", snoring Ukraininan men in their underwear, were a treat as I struggled to keep from rolling off of my bunk on the jerking train. When I arrived in Balaklia (at least a deserted, crumbling and unlit concrete platform that I hoped was in Balaklia) around 2 in the morning, there was no sign of Sally. Uh, oh. . .

Having found Sally I began a wonderful couple of weeks in Balaklia. Each day I went with Sally to her school where I was introduced to Ukrainian school lunch (think coffee and Borsch) and helped with English classes. The children presented me with roses and sang songs for me.

While visiting church with Sally, I was asked to share greetings from the church in Germany (Sally translated) and sing a Christian song. An experience that will not soon be forgotten!
