Thursday

We had English conversation group. The Shamrock had a flood, so we had to relocate down the street. Despite the change in location, even the latecomers managed to find us. My end of the table consisted of a Japanese student, a Turkish professor, and a Greek businessman. Although it was only his first time coming to the group, the Greek man boldly shared his testimony and the gospel with the women who were non-believers. He was powerfully affected by the change God had made in his life, and became so choked up that he had to pause at one point. His story caused the Turkish woman to ask me for an audio version of the Bible. One of the men who came later had previously told me that he was moving, so he would not come to the Shamrock anymore. His work plans changed, however, and he is still able to come. Although I did not get a chance to talk with him at all that evening, he approached me after the meeting and asked to get together.

Bible study was also good. Although I was able to follow along less this week than in previous times, I was able to catch that they talked about the trinity, gifts of the Spirit, and false preachers. I was asked why so many people in the United States who are not really Christians say that they are. In part I think that this is because there is little to lose and much to gain through claiming membership in the Church if you live in the States. Without actually having to follow the teachings of Christ, and in the absence of persecution, why not?

These verses from Philippians came to mind and were encouraging to me: 15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.[c] 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. (NIV)
